DECA Competitions: Where Future Marketing Leaders are Made
The non-profit student marketing association DECA prides itself on helping high school students learn the necessary skills to become future leaders in marketing and business. In order to learn these skills, students compete locally and nationally at DECA conferences. These competitions consist of role plays where the students act as already hired employees who are presented with a marketing or business situation that must be handled. After devising a strategy and solution for the problem, the students then present their ideas to their boss, a business professional who acts as the judge. Below is an example of the role play that students would be presented to in the Food Marketing Associate Level Event:

EVENT SITUATION
You are to assume the role of customer service associate for FOOD PLUS, a grocery superstore. While you have only been at the store for less than one year, you were recently promoted from cashier to the customer service desk. Your professionalism, reliability and ability to work with customers were the main reasons you became the stores youngest customer service associate. The assistant manager (judge) would like you to develop a presentation for employees discussing the stores policies on employee appearance.
FOOD PLUS is the largest grocery store in the area, traditionally offering several fast-food options in addition to its grocery selections. Recently the stores manager complained to the assistant manager (judge) about the appearance of the employees. Over the past few months there have been lapses in appropriate dress/appearance primarily with the younger employees. Several employees have substituted unapproved white shirts and black pants/skirts for their work uniforms, hair has not been groomed neatly and tied back when appropriate, and uniforms are wrinkled. Also, body piercing and excessive jewelry have become an issue despite written requirements for no visible sign of body piercing (except earrings) and no excessive jewelry. Expectations for appropriate appearance are thoroughly discussed during the interviewing process and are presented to the employee again upon hiring.
Since most of the problem seems to be with employees about your age, the assistant manager (judge) has asked you to make a short presentation on these issues during the employee meeting this week. The assistant manager (judge) would like to preview your presentation prior to the meeting.
You will present your remarks in a role-play to take place in the assistant managers (judges) office. The assistant manager (judge) will begin the role-play by greeting you and asking to hear your presentation. Once you have made your presentation and have answered the assistant managers (judges) questions, the assistant manager (judge) will conclude the role-play by thanking you for the presentation.
